King Oceanview Room at the Westin Resort & Spa Cancun

To escape winter in Kentucky, we booked a stay at the Westin Resort & Spa Cancun. We had a king-size room overlooking the Gulf instead of the bay.

As you can see, the view from our room was fantastic! There are rooms with balconies but the package offer we had from Westin did not include that upgrade for our price.

The top picture I took was our room as it was arranged when we arrived. It seemed oddly empty and lacking function on that side. To change that, I simply moved the chairs and table to look out at the view instead. A simple swap like that made all of the difference.

The only other thing to note about the room is that the furnishings were a bit shabby. It was very clean, just a little worse for wear. There is construction going on at the hotel so hopefully they are in the process of remodeling all of the rooms and this one is just still on the list.

Speaking of that construction, it wasn’t a problem when we were in our room but it was an issue when you are out by the central pool where the Arena Sports Bar is located. Of course, the construction area could be in a different location on your visit. I would ask about it when you reserve your room and ask for a room as far from any construction as possible!

Dining at the Westin Resort & Spa Cancun

Sea & Stones Restaurant

Sea & Stones is their finer-dining option that is only open for dinner. We booked a table here two nights and enjoyed both meals immensely. Being able to sit on the deck right next to the ocean waves was such a romantic and relaxing way to end the day.

Our favorite thing we ate was their empanadas. We had them as an appetizer ordering the chicken and the beef to try. They were crispy and flavorful! I would go out-of-my-way to eat here even if I were staying at a different resort. We averaged $100 for each meal here.

Sabor Casual Restaurant

Sabor is the breakfast buffet. We only ate here once but not because it was bad, we just aren’t big breakfast people so the cost wasn’t worth it to us. They had a large variety of foods to choose from including an omelette bar. It was $58 for both of us to eat the buffet.

Arena Sports Bar

I am still dreaming about those Baja Fish Tacos. I ate them every day. They give you three large tacos so I would order these and my husband would order something else we could share and we each got to have these scrumptious tacos! I was also a fan of the jalapeno margarita, which I also made sure to have each day.

This spot is so convenient for coming up from the beach to eat outside on the patio or to order from your beach-side lounger. We spent about $70 per ticket here. This always included one margarita.

PROS

  • The staff was extremely friendly and top-notch and they appreciated me using my mediocre Spanish skills
  • Location – some consider it a con, it is at the edge of hotel row but I consider it a pro because it wasn’t as hectic and closer to the airport
  • Beach – extremely clean, waves are a bit rough in front of the hotel but if you walk a little bit down to the right, in front of the Club Med hotel, the break wall there works and the water is safe for even little kids
  • Food – on-site restaurant and bar both served very good food. They do bring food and drinks to your beach loungers
  • Spa – I had my first facial here. It was an 80 minute facial that left my skin feeling amazing. It also included an arm and foot massage while the masks were working.

CONS

  • Rooms – very clean but a little shabby. The “living” area in front of the window was rather empty. The addition of a loveseat or just repositioning furniture would make it better. The bed was comfortable and there was plenty of hot water. The furniture just needs updating. A/C works but it still stays a bit humid. Might want to pack a fan if you are a hot sleeper.
  • Food – a little pricey since you are a captive audience. Expect American pricing.

ACCESSIBILITY

  • Three main elevators in the hotel, all working while we were there
  • Ramps leading down to the pool but not directly onto the beach
  • Ramps leading to the Sea & Stones dinner restaurant

OTHER NOTES

  • American power outlets in rooms
  • You cannot take an Uber from the Cancun airport to your hotel but you can take one from your hotel back to the airport.
